Elmer Campbell is best known by the name he signed on his illustrations: E. Simms Campbell. It was his sense of humor along with an ability to draw sensuous beautiful pin-up girls making him the most sought illustrator in the nation. Born in St. Louis, he holds the record for being the first Black cartoonist to draw for many of the biggest name national publications in America during a time when segregation was widely practiced.
