Born in Rimini, Italy, to a French mother (Marie Gruau), he moves to Paris 1n 1930, and starts drawing for various newspapers and magazines and is introduced to Christian Dior. He leaves for the United States in 1948, where he works for Harper's Bazaar, American Vogue, and  Flair. In France he contributs to Elle, Madame Figaro and Vogue.
